S70 Ignition Relay

Post by redstar17 »

My S70 went weird the other day. Very hot humid weather. (Wife driving and reports that...) Started fine. Starts to drive and all power items fail (although engines still runs and drives) power windows, radio, wipers, etc. Gets it home and I look at it, Now all power items work except now no power to start the car. No cranking. 6 month old battery. Lights etc seem to be bright so...

What's the chance it's the ignition or air-compression relay that got blown? How do I check? I can very easily access the relays. Volvo manual says don't screw with them... BUT I did remove and put them back in. When I remove the ignition relay and turn ignition I hear the fuel pump, and then "hear" the slight sound of the ignition engaging. If I put the relay back in I also hear a click of the relay. Anyway to test the relay?? I can think of the answer of finding another S70 and replacing my relay with it's relay and see if that car starts/doesn't start. Is this dangerous to the other car? If it IS the realy I'll save a towing charge and and a lot of diagnostic work.

The car has always started immediately until this happened.

Maybe corosion on the starter or battery terminals. On the starter itself is a small wire that goes to a seperate terminal this is what activates the starter.

The year is a 1998

I talked to a good (but distant ---$125 tow to garage) VOLVO place and the guy said that if I heard the realy click then it is working,

The suggestion about the terminals is something that I'll check. I think that battery connections are clean because all power items work fine and I'm getting absolutely no crank to the starting.

With corrosion on the terminals you can get all other items on and not the starter as it draws more amps.
