i have a 2005 s40. Does it require and special kind of brake fluid.

There is nothing special about it so long as it is DOT 4+.

This is from the owner's manual:
Brake fluid DOT 4+ boiling point >536°F (280°C), P/N 9437433 0.63 US quarts (0.6 liters)
