'04 Volvo S60 "Moaning Noise" From Engine

Post by Aarondawg »

Hey there, I just bought an '04 Volvo S60 OT and noticed that after driving it for a while, there is a "moaning sound" coming from the engine. I took it back to the "non-Volvo" dealership where I bought it and the mechanic said that it was the "cowl drain". He said that he put some tape over the drain and the sound did not occur. The car has just under 60K miles on it. When it first occured, I was going about 80 MPH on the freeway but this morning it occurred at a lesser speed, but only after about 20 minutes of driving.

Anyone every heard of such? If so, how is it fixed? I negotiated a 90 day\3000 miles Powertrain warranty through EASY CARE with the deal.

Thank you,
Aarondawg

Hello, Tape?...Over a drain?...moaning noise? If your car still makes this noise open the hood and try to locate it. It's not the A/C fan running on to dry the evaperator? How long did it moan when left alone? Kira

I'm not sure what he means by "cowl drain," but I'm pretty sure that drains should not be covered. I would check all the air intake tubes for the engine. You might have a loose clamp or hose that is letting the intake air "noise" out. It could also be a bad bearing in an accessory like the alternator, water pump, or timing belt tensioner.

Moaning... First thing I'd check is if the power steering fluid is low? 04+ takes CHF 11s so many places do not fill them because they don't have it.

It only makes the noise after the car is warmed up for like within 20 minutes and mainly on the interstate. So I don't know.
