440 1995 B18U - Troubleshooting cooleant leak

Post by Skinkehunden » Sun Apr 04, 2010 2:12 pm

Earlier today I just found out that I'm having a major cooleant leak. First clue was that the air comming out of the heater was not hot at all, although the heater control knob was turned all the way up. I pulled over and started looking around for the source of heater-problem, after about 10 or 15 min. I noticed the cooleant resevior was completely empty. Gently driving in to the nearest gas station and filled up with some fresh cooleant liquid. Let it idle and kept on filling until it stopped draining the resevior. Then gently drove the last couple of km home, and then checked again. All of the cooleant was drained from the resevior (with only a 20 min. drive). I've checked the radiator plug, the main hoses from the resevior to the radiator and the hose from the radiator to the engine. There seems to be no visible leaks around the hose joints - haven't checked under and back of the engine at this late hour - I'll check it tomorrow.

So does anyone have an idea where to begin looking?

Head gasket failure. See if it stutters badly in the morning.

After a lot of troubleshooting, I finally found the leak - it was the backside of the engine. It was a slow leak from a hose and was only leaking when the engine was hot. So I apparently ran the engine dry of cooleant(!!!), but luckily the engine seems to have taken no damage *pheew*. Replaced the hose with one from my spare '92 model, and no leaks anymore.
