Replacing old 850

Post by mirae1 »

I am looking to replace my wife's aging '94 850 with nearly 300,000 with something new or should I say newer. I've been looking at a 2005 S70 with 78,000. and there are also a few local S60's that have caught my attention. What are some recommendations from the forum for something that will give me as much hiway time as this 850 has? I have also been looking at a couple of local BMWs and even a 2005 Jag. The 850 was my first European Car and now I am hooked as is my wife..

We too decided to replace our 1997 Volvo 850 GLT with 230K. My wife deserved an upgrade.

Bought a 1997 Volvo 850 GLT with 82K. Hope to get another 150K out of her. I should be ready
for a senior home at that point.

Other Volvo 850 undergoing major service to prepare for commuting service. Has never broke
down once in 230K of service.

Bought my 850 3 years ago for $1000 knowing it had some issues. The PCV system was plugged and it was blowing oil. This site helped me understand what was happening and I was able to get it fixed on my own. The transmission went out but was able to replace it with one from a wrecking yard cheap enough. Then a few months ago I got a leak in the transmission cooler line inside of the radiator. Before I caught it I had lost another transmission...THey don't like antifreeze..Go figure. I have put another transmission in it..again from a wrecking yard so the price wasn't too bad. I'm getting pretty good at swapping transmissions and can do it in a week end if I stick with it.

That is one of the reasons I have been looking at the S70 as a replacement. They appear to be basicly the same power train in a different body with a few more refinements.
