speakers suggestions

Post by dimasp »

Hi ! Is Dimas ( volvo 850 glt sedan), I'm planning to change the speakers on my volvo, any suggestions? Somebody told that the dash and rear panel were tweeters and the ones on the door coaxials. I'm planning to stay??? with the original SC-811 and add a 4 channel amp. I talk to someone and he say "don't change the tweeters" just change the ones on the doors. All the speakers still working but I"ll like to improve the sound
Thanks!!!!

Rear speakers are huge mids not tweeters

There’s a lot that goes into selecting speakers for cars, so take your time. Since the factory speakers probably had paper cones, they’d be pretty dead by now and not really be able to reproduce the sound well. You have a 15 year old car, so your speakers are the same age and they should all be replaced (IMHO). If you’re looking for better sound (better than ‘good’) sound, I’d consider looking for a kit that has tweeter satellites, which means that the tweeter can be mounted separately then the midrange driver. This way, you can mount the midrange in the door and the tweeter in the dash. Usually they also have an external crossover so the tweeter and midrange are designed to work together very well. I popped the grill cover off the dash a while ago just to take a peek and the tweeter was mounted in an odd tray. You’ll probably have to modify it or make a new one to mount a new tweeter, but it should be too difficult. Another thing you’ll want to keep in mind when shopping is the mounting depth of the speaker. Buy a speaker that’s too “thick” and you’ll have to duct tape the grill in place – and that’s just plain ugly!
For my 850 wagon, I’d actually get two sets since the rear door has speakers and the rear columns have tweeters.
If you browse over to www.crutchfield.com, (and I’m sure there’s other websites, too) they can pinpoint speakers that fit your specific car model and locations. And, if you were going to connect them to the factory head unit, can include a wire harnesses for an easy connect.

Thanks for your time and your valuable tip. By the way do you still have the factory head unit? If so, do you connect an ipod to it? Wich adapter ( fr the ipod) you have?
Thanks again.

I have the original head, and I have one of those tape players that you used to plug in a portable CD player. Instead of a CD player, I plug in my phone's headphone jack - which I use insted of an iPod. Sometimes my daughters grab the wire and plug in their iPods, so I gotta suffer through their pop music...
