My Daughters S70 is Totaled

Post by sifd324 »

Our 1998 S70 SE 117K Leather, Sunroof etc was totaled last week when someone rear ended my daughter on the on ramp to the bridge. She is OK with minor injuries, but the S70 took a major hit. The trunk was crumpled into the rear seat. I think part of the reason was that the trunk took the brunt of the impact and not the bumper.

One of the more interesting arguments I had with the insurance company was the sunroof option on the S70 SE. I was told that Volvo did not offer this as a factory option and had to be dealer installed. As an FYI the settlement was for $7800.

I am sorry to report that we replaced this car with a 1999 Infiniti I30. We liked the S70 and it's quirks, but ran across a great deal. I have some odds and ends left over from the S70 and will try to get them listed in the next week or so.

I have a few pictures of the car if anyone is interested and will email them on request. Might be an interesting topic.

If it had a black/grey interior, I would very much be in need of some of those odds & ends.

Good luck with the cost of Nissan parts. I can't believe what they charge for stuff on my wife's altima. Makes Volvo seem reasonable.

Here's the pics sifd324 sent to me of his daughter's S70. Looks like the crumple zone worked pretty well.

Wow, certainly hit pretty hard. What was she hit by? How fast? That picture is a testament to Volvo safety. I think she would've been injured worse if she was driving anything else. Speaking of Nissan's and wrecks, here are some links to some pics of a Nissan that crashed into the tree in our front yard at 35 mph a couple months ago. It happened at about 7:30 in the AM and needless to say, it woke me up. The driver of the car died on the way to the hospital.

Huh, only 35 MPH? Looks like at least 50 mph.

The Volvo pics and the radio are the only thing keeping our '94 850 in our driveway.

Every now and then I get in my 850 and notice the thickness of the doors. "Solid" they say, to me.

And look at the pics I posted above... the back door's window isn't even broken, and the back seat passenger area is hardly disturbed. All that force was consumed by the trunk crumple zone. Fantastic engineering.

This may be slightly off topic, but I've heard that Nissans don't produce very good frames. I guess the pictures prove it.

My old car (1993 Mazda 626 LX) got wrecked when it slipped and went over the double line and right into a large 2004 Dodge Dakota, we were both traveling 30-35 and I hit him head-on (from my prespective). Amazingly no one was injured in the crash. My 626's frame held up extremely well (as well as my strut bar) and caused no damage beyond the struts (it crumbled just correctly). There was zero damage into the cabin. The force of the accident even caused my rearview mirror (and yet the glass didn't even break) to be thrown into the backseat (and that was not because of the airbag, which I didn't even realize that it went off until after the accident). The little 626 crashed into his rear axle and ripped it off! Damn. (Thats whats insurance it for.)

After the accident I became a safety nut, and bought me a Volvo!
