Fuel hatch clip broke off

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Fuel hatch clip broke off

Post by mikesmith20001 »

Hello,

Model: 2006 S80 AWD 2.5T

In this article when i refer to "flap" i mean the part that opens and closes, the one that the cap is connected to with a curly rubber wire.

I go to put fuel in my car, unlock the hatch from the inside, walk around and open the flap. The spring and bits of plastic cracked off as i opennd the flap.

The plastic that broke is the one on the flap itself, so basically the spring hinges don't have anything to hold on to.

Once the car moves it locks ok as normal, but the problem is the flap does not close itself so sometimes it locks even though the flap was not in place.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, i glued some small magnets to the flap, these hold the flap against the fuel hatch long enough for the lock to engage.

My questions are as follows:

1) Are (and i might be over thinking this) the magnets doing any harm or misguiding the computer?
2) Would this be covered under the Volvo warranty?
3) Looking at the flap, the painted side (side facing the outside) is held onto the flap frame with metal clips. If i end up changing the hinges etc, will i have to replace the fancy painted side?
4) If the magnets are doing what i need, should i even try a repair?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike ,

I'll try to answer your questions. To put you at ease this is a common occurance and happens to most Volvo owners several times during ownership. IPD sells a replacement kit as well as many others.

1) Are (and i might be over thinking this) the magnets doing any harm or misguiding the computer?
Answer - Not at all - magnetic resonance decreases exponetially by distance. After about an ich their is nothing to speak of.

2) Would this be covered under the Volvo warranty?
Answer - Oh yes - this happens quite often

3) Looking at the flap, the painted side (side facing the outside) is held onto the flap frame with metal clips. If i end up changing the hinges etc, will i have to replace the fancy painted side?
Answer - No the replacement hinge will hook directly to the fuel door ( painted part)

4) If the magnets are doing what i need, should i even try a repair?
Answer Yes - magnets will not hold it on as the hinge continues to degrade and eventually lets the fuel door stress the area the lock retains it on and then falls off the car leaving a nasty scratch.

Thanks JDS60R.

Called the Volvo dealership who said i need a new flap/door.

Maybe if i explain my poroblem, you might be able to confirm.

So i have the following parts:

1) Fuel hatch - where you insert the gas nossle
2) Hinge - connecting the door/flap to the rest of the car
3) Frame around the door/flap - holds the spring mounts. Pictures of on the internet usually show this part as having a Volvo safety label decribing tire pressure etc. Once close dit faces inside the fuel hatch.
4) Fancy door/flap painted the same as the car exterior. Its held by being mounted onto the frame mentionend in 3

The problem is the frame mentionend in 3 is what has cracked apart. The hinge is fine.

Basically the spring has no way of holding onto the door/flap as the two plastic holes broke off.

Any ideas?

Now I understand - Sounds like the plastic frame inside the fuel door broke and they are advising that they will replace the fuel door with the frame.

Makes sense if they don't sell the frame seperately

Thanks JDS60R.

New fuel door, sounds expesnive :)

I'm more worried the new door won't look the same tint of black as the rest of the car.

I'll take it to the dealer tomorrow and see what they say.

Will post updates.

Thanks,

Took it to the dealer, the frame is not sold seperately, they say i need a new door and hinge. The part is spray painted the correct colour at the dealer. They can not garuntee the part will not look newer than the rest of the car.

Roughly around the $250 cdn for the repair.

The mechanic was impressed with the magnets and recomended just seeing how it and if they fall off. Even if they fall off i could just use a stronger adhesive as i originally used silicone i had spare.

Will see how the magnets do for now.

last year my fuel door broke off in the auto car was, which i might add was not there fault, it ended up costing like 20 dollars u.s. and the body guy installed for even less. he said it was not labor intensive. part of the inner fender liner had to come off,3-4 screws, so you could get in behind it.no problems since and the fix was only 35 dollars. good luck by the way i did not have to get a new door when getting the hinge assembly.
