I have not yet had to replace one on any of my 850s but I understand that there is a bolt or bolts that you need to get to through a hole in the pulley. I will need to fire up a Windows partition to get to VADIS but I will try to pull the procedure for you.

Its not too bad, but make sure you remember what bolts where. i was at a wrecking yard when mine went out(lucky, i coasted in). found one with 100k on it for $15 and put it in in the middle of parking lot. I had never done it before so it took me about four hrs cause i had to feel for all the bolts and figure out the PS res detached. you have to take off the idler pulley and bracket that holds it. the alternator is really in the worst poss spot on this car.

good luck, man and Merry Christmas!

Help, I'm in the middle of changing the alternator and can't figure out how to get it out.
To bring you up to speed - I have read the write-up (VolvoSpeed) but still can not get it out, the write-up seems to be missing tiny details. I've gotten to the point where I'm trying to get the last bolt out but can not find it. Power steering pump is loose, tensioner is out, I can't figure out how to get bracket holding the idler pull out, which would allow me access the last bolt holding the alt. in (the closest to the block). So I'm looking at the idler pulley, AC compressor, and alternator. Where do I find the last bolt... Please any photos.
Please any assistance would be greatly appreciated, :!:

It's impossible to see with the manifold in the way. Facing the engine bay from the front, you can feel down to the farthest part of the alternator away from you and you'll feel the head of the bolt. I had to use a straight wrench to turn that one, no room for a ratchet. If you still have trouble locating the bolt, just look at your new alternator to figure out spatially where that bottom hole is.
