Hello I have a 1998 Volvo V70, yesterday I noticed burning smell and this morning checked oil, Nothing there but there was a pool of oil in the volvo logo just next to oil cap, I put in oil 10 days ago to just under max marker its all gone, my husband drives the car and never notices bizzar noises nor fumes so its most likely been going on for some time.

Have filled up oil, washed off any spilled oil with petrol and hot water, been for a spin. ther are a few spots of oil coming from oil cap literaly fine spray and lots more oil dribbling down away from me over the back of the block thing. I know not the name.

I also lifted oil dip stick while running and have slight fumes, friend says thats normal.

I know very little, have little funds to repair and was hoping you might have an idea car has 200,000m :|
new tyres. new suspention, new starter motor, recent cam belt, air filter etc drives fine, but worried our old lady might be in danger.

Depends what you term normal??? Oil blowing out like that shows the PCV is blocked [Positive Crank Case Ventilation] and needs replacing urgently if you leave it eventually the pressure will blow the crank seal out which is a big job to refit. Your local Volvo Agent will get them in for you as will any good Volvo specialist will.

It's not a hard job to replace just time consuming if you are on a tight budget you can accomplish the job with a few simple tools, Volvo agent will charge you in excess or 300 euro, specialist probably 200 euro, doing it yourself cost of the parts that should come in at less than 100 euro... Don't forget the seal under the oil cap it will be stiff, the undoing of the manifold will take longer than removing and refitting the system.

There are some great write ups on how to complete the job and as long as you are thorough, don't rush and dont cut corners it will be good experience for you. I imagine the 98 V70 engine will be very similar to the 97 850.

Thank you, I had a look at the detail on how to change the pvc and well, I'm game but do not feel confident enough to start. How do you know when its the crank seal that s blown, what are the symptoms. Garage opens on tues, I'm guessing I can damage further if I drive :(

Is the crank seal anything to do with crank shaft, I was going to go to the garage on friday as there was a noise a little like the noise one would get with a stone in the wheel, after making the appointment I cancelled as the noise had stopped and instead gave her a hoover and polish! It was in the middle under the car, but on Friday morning turned off radio, fan etc and listened , slowed down etc but could hear nothing. Is thatr my cam seal :?

Do yourself a favor and change out the breather box NOW.
If your RM seal is not leaking it will be shortly as the oil will find its way to every seal in the engine and start pushing oil out.

I've never heard a crank seal making noise its more likely the over pressure messing with the cam followers and yes the crank seal goes around the crankshaft but be warned that will be a very expensive replacement if your car is manual the clutch needs removing if your car is automatic both the engine and gearbox needs seperating.

To save your engine and your pocket it would be best to order the PCV set, or at least the oil seperator box, get that fitted and after a week your car should run smoothly again with no smoke/oil. If your V70 engine is the same design as the 97 850 engine there are two 25mm ports close to the oil seperator make sure these are both very clear and don't do what I did on my 93 N/A engine and believed one was a blank port so had to do the job twice. In France you have a great network of Volvo Specialists especially just outside of VillePinte and Dunkeque oh not forgetting Caen [used all three]

Bonjour!
