Thank you et merci for your help, I think I'm very well versed to go to parts people and garage now.
I'll come back and tell you the verdict on my ever so ( to date) faithful emerald green gas gazzling friend
Oil Problem any ideas, please?
For information the PCV kit is not available as an aftermarket part just Genuine Volvo so that might be where you're having problems with your garage.
Would be worth checking where you nearest Volvo main dealership is or specialist so you are guarenteed to get the correct parts.

Maybe in France it is VCP? Usually they reverse it- eg walkie talkie= talkie walkie in France.
Also if you remove your dipstick the oil should no longer spray out of the oil cap. That would be one way to verify the pressure is high. Also there should be a lot of air blowing out the dipstick when removed while running. When you put your finger over it you should feel pressure build up if the VCP
is plugged up. And if you really want to know the pressure you can make a manometer with clear tube, 10mm ID (inside diameter), about 1.5m, and put water in it, make a U shape and attache one end to the dipstick tube. The differential water level is the pressure in mm H20. I thought mine was plugged but I only had about 10mm difference in height.
What really helped is using Lucas brand Injector and top end lubricant. I was seeing creamy looking water condensation at the bottom of the dipstick. I changed oil, added the Lucas oil in the fuel, and after 1 week it was almost gone, and after 2 weeks completely gone (two tanks of fuel). It uses less oil now also. I bought the car used and I don't think the oil was changed often enough. The lube cleaned up the piston rings as it is supposed to do. It has about 150k miles (850 turbo LP).

Thank you rcannon, I haven't treated her to any of that lubricant for a while, a year or so, I'll do that today, good Idea. I filled up with oil yesterday as I had zer0
I think she has had regular oil changes, annualy with every service anyway, but perhaps thats not enough.
yours

Is it possible the top hose that comes out of the top of the engine and goes down to the oil seperator could have blown off? you said there is a pool of oil by the Volvo logo on the engine, could that be the cause? Just a thought.

Thank you everyone, I drove cautiously yesterday , kids to school and back, my car has never had such good miles to gallon!
went to garage this am, he pulled the car to bits, blew air through various bits and bobs, put it back together, 100euros later, green goddess is back on tracks and huge sigh of relief all round.
I went to another garage yesterday for some of that fuel lubricant, they scoffed and said they didn't sell it as it was a con! I'll get some somewhere else
now I've found this great forum I'm off to post another query, any one got spare driver door window switches for sale , I have new mech but the buttons don't work.
thanks again CC

Unless you're using really bad, cheap or old fuel, I know rural france and belgium arent known for good fuel stocks nor is central norfolk for that matter, you shouldnt need any fuel additives as it's not proven they benefit the car in any manner all they might do is raise the octane a point or so and some contain water absorbers otherwise they will do nothing that good quality petrol wont [If you disagree with me then send it on the back of a sealed postage stamp] These fuel lubricants were good when we switched from leaded to unleaded or good quality to nasty fuels [jet is a naff brand imo] you will be far better with good oil changes say every 4 months or 6000 miles which ever comes first: First in February, second in May, third in November for [February one will freshen the engine up after the ice and snow of the winter along with the stop start cold start period one in May is good as its beginning of the summer driving period and November is good to prepare for the cold weather of stop starts] If you really want to buy some then any good motor parts store will stock it not sure what you have over there and some of the bad ones will too to get your money most don't contain more than petroleum distilates ie the same as injector cleaner.

Actually the Lucas or other fuel lubricant is to clean build up from injectors and piston rings. If one has not changed oil often enough the rings can build up deposits. I tried it and it really worked as I said above. It also reduced oil consumption.

Wait, wait. Was anything actually replaced? And what was it replaced with? Did you have a Volvo dealer do this?coucoucheval wrote:Thank you everyone, I drove cautiously yesterday , kids to school and back, my car has never had such good miles to gallon!
