Rebuilt axels now clicking in tranny

Post by wolfspiritky »

Just had both axels rebuilt on my 97 850R.......all new CV's and boots.

Now I am getting a "clicking" sound that seems to be in the tranny. I have pulled and re-seated both axels. It seems to be caused by the passengers side....can hear it when the right tire is rotated while on jack stands. Doesn't click when drivers side is rotated or when the right side axel is removed and drivers side wheel is rotated.

Any ideas??? Could I have screwed something up??

Thanks Guys!!!!

Did they re-seal your original axles or put on rebuilt axles? I have had bad luck with most of the rebuilt axles from the auto parts stores. If they used your old axles it could be that they have not properly seated the key that locks the joint together.

I had the originals rebuilt. I did all the work as far as removal and installation. They (local shop) installed new CV's and boots.

Can you tell what side it is coming from? The passenger's side axle is a real easy deal and if you have the bearing cap on it should be perfect. The driver's side axle can be a bit tricky to get seated and if it is not fully seated it might lead to your problem. I get on the back (outside) of the inner CV with a board and smack the axle home with a short 5 lb sledge hammer to get it to lock.

If the axles are installed correctly then the shop that re-sealed them has obviously not put them back together correctly. What a PITA to do it all over again.

I can rotate the the drivers side without noise. Its only when I rotate the passengers side I hear the click. Lying under the car you can clearly here the click in the trans pan.

you might just wanna replace that side with new CV shaft since you've already tried adjusting your rebuilt axle. I wouldn't risk screwin my transaxle up.
