98 V70, sunroof stuck shut, not the motor

Post by olpossum »

I really like this car, it's just what I wanted - 5spd w/sunroof. But the sunroof won't open. I have searched this and other sites since buying this car. The motor is trying to open the sunroof, I can see it torquing in both directions when the button on the dash is pushed, and the glass moves a tiny bit. I took the motor down and pushed the button, and the motor ran fine, in both directions. Does this mean the problem is in the cables, as opposed to the alarm relay? I just tried pushing up on it, pretty hard, while activating the motor, but I don't want to break anything, so got nowhere with that.

I suppose I'll remove the headliner next and proceed to removing the whole works to see if I can find anything to un-bind, or whatever. At least it's not stuck open. Alldata says to open it to vent, to start the removal process. Any got any ideas?

Congrats on your purchase, and welcome to the site.

I would remove the sunroof glass - there are 4 screws on each side and it lifts right out, and see what the heck is blocking the tracks.

Link to taking sunroof out is here, but I can't remember if you can get to the screws while the glass is down. I had mine apart to replace the weatherstrip seal a few years back.

That's the rub - everyplace says to raise the sunroof to the vent position and take out that black plastic stuff and remove those screws, but this sunroof doesn't want to move.

Vent position means rear is raised. Maybe it needs a gentle helping hand from inside.

Earlier, while pushing the top end of the sunroof button on the dash, I pushed up on the back of the glass with my open other hand, stopping when it felt like something was about to break, which I want to avoid. That black plastic stuff in the sides under the glass will move vertically some, and I tried that and pulling out on them, but not to the breaking point. I'm actually just trying to avoid, or put off, having to remove the whole thing to find the obstruction, when maybe I can shake something out of the works. I don't like to ride in a car without an open sunroof.

once the plastic cosmetic stripes are removed you can easily have acces to remove bolts

i removed my sunroof from a scrapyard car it was on closed position (had no battery) its quite easy, pry off the stripes unbolt and there you go

i will try to find the ajustement instruction on vadis and post back

best of luck
