I've done a bunch of searching but can't find the exact problem.
Here are the details:
1984 240 DL (Tan but I don't think you care)
211,000 miles
New Distributor, rotor & plugs (within the last month)
Passes emissions (in TN) also within the last month
Stalls sometimes when coming to a stop. Never stalls while the car is moving only when at a complete stop. It starts back up but might stall again if you move up at a stop sign.
Everything else is running fine, but I'm not even sure where to start.....
1984 DL Stalling at Stop
Welcome to MVS!
Is there any sort of RPM surging or anything when you apply the brakes? I have a leaking brake servo and occasionally when I step on the brake pedal, I'll get a dip in RPM's while the vacuum rebuilds. Also, does the engine sputter and die, or is it like you turned off the key?

Well this is my son's car and he's reporting the issues to me. He doesn't have a tach but he doesn't feel like it dips or surges. It's more like it just turns off.
It's not an all the time issue. It appears that if he's driven it maybe 20 miles then comes to a stop, it will die on him. Driving short distances never seems to be a problem.
Thank you so much!

Which engine is fitted to the car? In 1984 there was a large choice of engines, some had fuel injection, of which there were two types, and some were still using carburettors. Idle problem solving was different for the different systems.

Hello again.
The car has the 23F engine per the manual.
An update on the problem since I have now driven the car and had it stall on me instead of what my 16 year old son described.
The stalling occurs at a stop. I had to drive it for 25 miles and then switch to a lot of stop and start driving before at a stop sign, I pressed on the gas and there was a hesitation before the engine responded. At the next stop light the car was idling fine, but when I went press on the gas, the car died. It was then very difficult to start and when it did, it didn't seem to be idling at the proper rate. It then died again once it got up to idle.
But after the second round of stalling, the car was fine for the trip home.
Thanks for your help.
Rob

The mass airflow sensor can be cleaned with a special spray available at all parts stores. It may look clean but it is deceptive.

While you have the throttle body cleaner in your hand, also clean the idle control motor...Sounds like it is sticking...
OK - Since cleaning the throttle body and the mass air flow.....it didn't do the trick. Same issues. Obviously, I did no harm in cleaning these parts so nothing lost.
Off to clean more parts and I also ordered a new PCV valve, well actually the relocation kit from IPD. Once again, it may not be the solution, but it certainly won't hurt. Also will be installing a new fuel filter. Who knows when the last one was changed?

Ok so the frustration continues....
I changed the o-rings on the injectors and cleaned the injectors - they were dirty but not awful. Turned the car on and no leaks etc.
I then installed the Flame Trap relocation kit from IPD - the old trap was nasty but definitely not 100% clogged as light could be seen through it very well. Turned the car on and no issues.
Went to get cleaned up to take it out for a drive and now it won't run. It turns over but never catches.
I just don't get it.
