I think you may have blown - not your fault, they just up and croak - your ECC controller based on your very good description of the events up to your failure.

Pull the ECC controller out which is quite easy. Just remove the radio, you really don't need to unplug it but if you do be sure you have the code. Once the radio is out of the dash reach behind and push the ECC controller from the rear. It will take a bit of initial force but then it will pop right out of the face of the dash. Once you have it out remove the cover and look for evidence of a blown capacitor, a charred circuit board, and smoke residue on the top of the cover.

Well I just got done checking the ECC. It doesn't appear to have any burnt spots, or smoke build up on it. I've taken some pictures of it, perhaps I'm missing something.
