Fixing the Air Conditon

Do I have to go to a shop to get my ac system working again? Or can I just go to autozone and buy some refrigerant and just fill it myself?

Well, whats wrong with it? You can add a can of freon but if thats not your problem, that won't work.

I believe that all it needs is freon, when I tried the AC something under the hood kept making a ticking noise that would come and go while the ac was running.

That's the compressor cycling on and off. You are indeed low on R134A but you can refill it yourself for cheap. However if it leaks out fast, less than a month, your EVAP is probably gone.
