A/C compressor not engaging

It getting hot and my wife and kids say Fix the AC. I know there is a leak in my system. And it seems more than likly its the evaporator from what I read. I would like to try and do a leak test before I take 10+ hours pulling the dash out. However, at this point the clutch will not cycle on, to pull Freon into the system. Is there a way to bypass the clutch, so that I can at least get the freon in so I can find where its leaking out.

One of the experts will respond I'm sure but I will give this a shot. I think the compressor stops coming on if the freon gets too low. If you add a can via the low port I think it should come on if it is working properly. So you can add a can with the uv dye in it and then look for the leak.

yep... thats right, if the press. is to low or to high the compressor wont kick on. try adding freon til it kicks on..

There is a switch on the firewall near the compressor. If you can short this with a paperclip, the compressor will engage and allow you to add freon into it.

Let us know what you find out and if there is a sure test to determine if evaporator. Mine is doing same thing. Have had system evac and recharged by indie, but leaks out pretty fast.
