timing belt job

Post by SeattleS80 »

I have a 2001 S80 2.9 with 74K miles. I'm looking to have the timing belt replaced soon. Does anybody know how much a job like that costs? Should it be done by a Volvo dealer or can I trust an Indy shop to have it done properly? Also, is it recommended that the water pump be replaced at the same time?
Thanks.

I thought the timing belt replacement schedule was at the 105,000 mile service?

Either way you're going to be coughing up a lot of money; but if you really don't want to do it yourself an indy shop should be able to handle it, although I would suggest buying the kit from either Volvo or FCP. You want to make sure the belt is OEM quality only. On the 850's the water pump is done at everyother TB change, I'm not sure how it is on the s80's.

The car will be 17 years old by the time I reach 105,000 miles (!), as I only put on around 3000 miles a year. However, the car is approaching ten years old, so I figure better safe than sorry. It's peace of mind and good preventative maintnence. I got quotes from both the local Volvo dealer service dept. and an Indy shop. Surprisingly, the Volvo dealership's estimate of $480 was about $150 cheaper than what the indy shop wanted. That quote does not include the water pump (neither the dealership nor the indy shop felt the waterpump needed to be replaced at this point) but does include the pulley and idle tensioners. So it looks like I'll be having it done at the dealership.

PS- the indy shop I called does not allow you to bring in "outside" parts or kits, so that's probably why their quote was not as competitive as I expected.
