Hi
I have a hole in my engine that a lot of oil is coming out of.Now i would like someone to tell me what this hole is for.
working your way up from the sump plug on my 2.4l five cylinder engine.about the top of the engine block there is hole where something should be its prob about inch /25mm in dia and doesnt appear to be threaded and the oil comes out hard when the engine is revved.its obvious something should be in this hole but because i have never been anywhere near this engine before,i have no idea what it is in order to order a new one and plug this leak.
would appreciate any help.
thanks Tony
does anyone know what this hole in my engine is

I would think that you should be able to ask the dealer this question without them charging you for an answer. Or is it leaking so badly that you can't drive it to the dealer or anywhere else? If so, hopefully you can take some picture(s) and post here or take to shown to a dealer mechanic....
My copy of VADIS only shows the 6 cylinder engine for the 2002 S80 so can't look at any diagrams which might help. I gather that it is on the 'front' of the engine i.e. the side facing towards the radiator? Could it be that your oil separator is missing? Did this just start or ???

Do you think its part 18 or20. Either way you have to close it up.
It looks like you lost a plug of some sort. You should plug it back up. As you continue to let moisture in the engine you are creating rust and lowering the lifespan of the engine. Many times you can buy a temp freeze plug ( rubber plug with bolt in the middle - tighten bolt and plug expands to seal the hole)and use it to seal up the hole until the correct part comes in. Its possible a clogged pcv /flame trap has casued excessive pressure and blown out the seal. Its rare that they pop out on their own.
If its not 18 or 20 let us know and we will bring up other part diagrams.

you're 100% right.Went to the dealers today, its part 20 alright. Its a turbo pipe connection, but without a turbo its simply plugged,so part is on order hopefully there isnt a more serious reason why it blew out the plug in the first place many thanks to all who helped me out on this.
Cheers

The dealer here in Las Vegas found the same plug missing when they replaced the fuel pump under the recent recall notice. I was told that the original design of the plug was not able to hold the internal pressures inside of the engine block and that the new plug was redesigned to stay in the hole. If that is true, why have we not seen a recall on this? It is an engine design problem. I was quoted $350.00 to install a new plug. I plan to purchase a new plug from the dealer and study the plug and hole to see if it can be installed from under the car without removing the exhaust manifold, or a tool can be designed to put the plug in from under the engine.

hmm I dont think the manifold would need to come out, might be tricky but I'd say it could be done. Looks like a cap with no threads, interference fit.

I wonder if popped out due to excess crankcase pressure... How is your PCV system?
