Good mechanic in the Detroit area?

Post by ainadude »

My girlfriend is visiting her family in the West Bloomfield Hills/Southfield area of Detroit and called me about what could be a nice opportunity. Her brother has a '94 Volvo 850 that has been giving him some intermittent problems and has been sitting in his driveway for the past six months. My girlfriend says he told her she can have it for free. In that we live in Hawaii, we'd have to drive it or have it flatbedded (or drive it ourselves) to the West Coast and then have it ship-freighted to Oahu.

The problem, as my girlfriend describes it (she knows nothing about cars and can't be very specific), sounds like it's something electrical, but she says her brother -- who's not into cars and is considering just giving it away to charity -- tells her the dealer says it will cost $3K to fix. I'm hoping a decent mechanic might be able to pinpoint the problem and offer us a better price to get it reliably ambulatory.

So, anyone in the Detroit area with a good mechanic who might be able to help us out? I'd greatly appreciate any input. Thanks in advance.
