99 s80 T6 will not start

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

99 s80 T6 will not start

Post by fpatti88 »

Hello everyone. I need your help. Tonight I came home from work and pulled into the driveway and shut the car off. My daughter walks up and ask me if I can move my car. I crank it over and it doesn't start. No big deal sometimes it doesn't start on the first try. I go to crank it over a second time and now I get nothing, not even a clicking noise. The fuses look good but I dont know where to look next. Any suggestions??

Have you tried reinserting the key a few times? Is there any message in the computer's display?

No I did'nt have any messages in the display. Go figure my wife tried to start the car this afternoon and it started right up. She tried it three times in a row and it started each time. What could have caused this? I am nervous to drive to work an hour away and have it just not start. Again, no messages are popping up. I just put a new starter in 2 months ago. Could there be a relay that is starting to go bad? If so where is it located?

I was hoping there was a message like "start prevented" or something like that (not sure what the message is in English). In that case it would probably have been a bad antenna in the contact (where you put your key in; again, not sure how it's called in English), which is fairly easy to exchange. You might still want to do that as the symptoms tell me it's going bad (except for the missing message), it's only half an hour work and the part itself is no more than around US$50, I would guess.

Not sure where the relay you are referring to is located.

I guess those kind of malfunctions is where the bad reputation of this car comes from.

Now the car is not starting again after a day of driving. A message did come up now saying "starter immobilized". The car will not start now. What is the antenna you mentioned? How do I get it out and replace it? Can you give me some instructions how to remove and replace it? Also, is this a dealer part only?

It's a dealer part only, I guess. I replaced it twice on my V70, but I'm pretty sure it's the same on a S80. You have to remove the upper and lower plastic caps right behind the steering wheel. After that you can see the round antenna ring around the contact switch. You should be able to remove it by sliding it to the right and disconnecting the connector. Like I said, it's only half an hour work and I guess the part itself is about 50US$ (I paid approx. €35 over here in the Netherlands).

Good luck, and I hope it helps!

Thanks for the information. Is their any way to test this part to verify that it's faulty or can it be by-passed temporarily to see if that truly is the problem?

I'm not sure there is a way to test it. Thank the Swedish designers that it can't be bypassed. If you could do that, then any car thief can do it as well ;)

Maybe the Volvo dealer can check the ecu to see if there are any error messages pointing to the antenna ring.

Yea, I wasn’t thinking clearly when I asked about by-passing it. I guess I'll give the dealer a call and ask them about a way to test the antenna ring. I really don't want to have the car towed to them. That would cost a small fortune between towing and dealership.

Thanks again

Ok, here’s an update for you. I used a meter to check if I was getting power at starter. That was good then I pulled the wire off the solenoid that comes from the key switch to see if it was ting power when I turned the key that was also good. But I did notice that it seemed to pull off fairly easy. I crimped the spade connector a little so it would be a tighter fit and reconnected it. It has been 4 days now and no more problems.
