Service light reset

Post by turbotim2 »

I read the "how to" on resetting the service light on my 96 850 and it indicates that I need the OBD II tool to do it. Well I have an OBD II tool and it doesn't seem to be able to reset the service light. The tool I have is not the cheap one either. The scanner shows no codes and nothing to reset yet the service light remains on. Any ideas?

No, not OBDII - a special volvo tool specific to reseting this light. It is only a timer - does not mean anything is wrong with your car, just that it has gone so long without being reset. Solution: either spend $180 or just accept that it will be on for 2 minutes every time you start the car. Think of it as a little game - how far can I get before the light goes off.

Yea I knew there was nothing wrong with the car, it figures they would have something special you would need just to turn off the service light.

Some tools reset service light, some don't. You have to check the fine print when you buy the tool.

It's a Volvo-specific code, so the manufacturers must do extra work, and some/most don't.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

Another option you may want to look into is finding an auto parts store or auto shop that will reset the light for you for free or for a small fee. I too have my service light on.

Didn't want to cough up the $170+ to buy a service light reset tool so I'm trying to find an auto parts store or auto shop that will help me out. I've checked AutoZone since they have a loan-a-tool program and they don't carry the service light reset tool. I'm still looking.... :roll:
