1998 Volvo S70, Display lights, TRACS OFF and ABS

My 1998 Volvo S70 has the TRACS OFF light and ABS light coming off and on. What could be the possible problem and solution to this problem? Could it possibly be the master brake cylinder?

99% chance your ABS module is dead. Don't buy a new one (BIG $$$)or have a shop do it, they'll charge you way too much. You can have it rebuilt at http://www.modulemaster.com/en/index.php for $100. Before I knew all about repairs and fixes for these cars, we had our module rebuilt at a local shop... $600.

But now I know!

If you're not comfortable messing with it, just have a mechanic "remove the ABS module" and then send it off yourself to be rebuilt, and when you get it back, you can have your mechanic re-install it. It's okay to drive for a little ways with the module out.

Can you explain how to remove the ABS module? I've figured out how to change the O2 sensors (which is relatively easy considering they charge so much $$ for something so similar to a spark plug). Also, this sensor has been coming off and on for awhile now, should I be concerned?

The website for Module Masters explains how to remove the module, here it is: http://www.modulemaster.com/en/Volvo/S70_info.php I've never done it, but if you're willing to give it a shot yourself, there are definitely many other people here who can give you some pointers.

What sensors are you talking about, the O2 or the ABS/TRACS? When the ABS/TRACS lights are on, basically it just means you don't have Anti-Lock Brakes. It's still safe to drive, although in a panic stop or on snow/ice there may be wheel lockup.

These guys rebuilt my module over 4 years ago and
I have had zero problems since.

I would add a couple suggestions.
Layout a shop rag or an old towel on the transmission, just below the module.
If you drop a screw, you won't spend all day looking for it as the towel will catch it.

I also had a gravity problem with my E-5 socket. It's a tight spot and even using an angle
head 1/4" ratchet, I lost the socket a few times. The towel didn't catch that as well, so I
taped a dental floss "leash" to my socket and it was simple to recover if it fell into the
darkness of the engine compartment.
