Leaking clutch slave cylinder on 98 V70
Leaking clutch slave cylinder on 98 V70
My clutch pedal went to the floor and there is brake fluid leaking out the vent hole on the bottom of the transmission. I disconnected the hydraulic line from the slave at the transmission but how do you remove the slave? Please don't tell me that the transmission must be removed!

It should be the same as an 850. If so, you just need to remove the circlip from the front end of the slave and slide it out. There is a short rod inside of the bellows that will want to hang up in the mount but you can remove the rod once you are free from the throwout bearing arm to get clearance.

That would be awesome, but this is the newer style that is internally mounted. The mounting hole that you mentioned where the cylinder 'should' be is empty. I looked up the parts online and discovered that mid-year in 98 they changed the configuration and began the internal mount. Unfortunately I'm about 99% positive that the transmission will need to come out to change it.

Internal?
New clutch (and throwout/slave) and you need to remove the trans, sorry
You will need a clutch, the fluid will have leaked all over the clutch and it cannot be just "wiped" off.
That is why they're called internal, they are inside the bellhousing

Yeah, it sucks.
My 99T5 lost its clutch in my driveway the week after I bought it!
Just shredded apart, couldn't even move the car

I can move the car by starting it in gear but you better have everything outta the way cuz you're moving on ignition! I can actually shift smoothly using the throttle just right and stopping isn't an issue but starting up again is. I actually drove the car home to upstate NY from Cleveland (where the slave chose to fail), but it was mostly Interstate and highway driving so it wasn't an issue.

not familiar with these internal clutches but, if yours has the bracket for the external slave, can you see the problem through the large square fork hole in the bellhousing?

My throwout bearing shat itself and tore up the pressure plate fingers while I was a couple of hundred miles out of town. I was amazed at how well the transmission would upshift without the clutch. I carefully planned my return back home to have the fewest possible number of traffic lights even if it was a longer route. I think my starter was mad at me by the time I got home but the starter still works fine. I hadn't tried that on a FWD model, the last one that I had a clutch failure on was my old 142.I can move the car by starting it in gear but you better have everything outta the way cuz you're moving on ignition!
