how big a mess is the heater core

In the past week, i have had to add coolant to the 99 V70 twice.

I just pulled back the carpet and it had some sticky fluid on it.

I am guessing, I need a new heater core.

My question at this point is. Will I have to pull out all the padding to let it dry? is that a huge pain in the butt?

I spilled quite a bit of coolant when I changed my S70 heater core a couple of years ago. It took what seemed like months for it to dry out. the padding underneath the carpet was quite soaked as well. If you are comfortable pulling the carpet and padding and have a way to clean and dry it, then based upon my experience, I'd say go for it.

with enought beer and time anything is possible

I just do nto seem to have time

I was just reading about this PCV crap and I can not belive i have to remove the manafold to get to it .

who comes up with this crap?

Heater core done.

My carpets and padding where already soaked. when I pulled the line out of the heater core I dumped a lot of coolant. So I stuck my finger in the hole, called my wife and she brought me a trash bag to fill up. That actually worked pretty well.

I did not feel like pulling out my seats, dash etc etc. So i cut out some large sections of padding and propped the rest up with screwdrivers. I then just left the doors open for a couple days. It did not dry out 100%, but i needed the car back on the road, so I closed her back up.

My acura MDX is down, so my wife is driving the volvo and I am driving the Rover. She had not complained, so I guesst he volvo is doing ok now.

I find this comment quite amusing at the moment as I recently posted about how much I love working on these cars because everything is so easy. The intake is cake to remove on this car. Try removing the intake manifold on a '95 LS400 because the starter took a crap. You need a 36" extension to reach the stater bolts, and they are TIGHT and OLD!!! Strip the head, and your day just got REALLY bad.

I drained and filled the cooling system 3 times with distilled water before doing the job. After the final drain, I replaced the heater core without clamping the hoses in the engine compartment. I only got what was in the heater core and nothing else. I was prepared for a big flood...but nothing more than the heater core.
I did everything I could to keep antifreeze out of the car's interior, and did good!

I already had coolant on the carpet from when it was leaking.

my pad was still a bit wet when I put it back together
