Volvo 850 starting and sluggish acceleration

Post by loyd198 »

This is a repost of a previous one with more information. I have a 1993 Volvo 850 GLT non-turbo automatic with 203000 miles. I am having two problems with this car..the first problem is it is hard to start. I takes 2 or 3 tries before it starts..hot or cold engine doesn't matter. This happens every time I try and start it. The second problem is it is sluggish and hesitant to accelerate up to 1500 rpm. This is an itermittant problem..it will accelerate fine for several days and then the next day or sometimes the same day it will accelerate poorly. The car idles fine and there is no smoke of any kind coming from the exhaust. I have no check engine or service engine lights on. This is what I have done so far..cleaned throttle body, cleaned MAF sensor, replaced cam position sensor, complete tune-up (plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor) using all OEM Bosch or Volvo parts, fuel filter replaced, catalytic convertor replaced, tube from air fileter box replaced, fuel injection cleaner has always been used every 3rd tank of gas. All the gauges indicate the engine is running fine. Anybody have any suggestions on what to try next ?

One more thing to add..took the car to the Volvo dealer service department for a diagnostic and they couldn't get it to throw any codes on their computer !

Check your fuel pressure, both with the key in position II and then leave the gauge on and watch the pressure with the key off.

It could be a couple of things but answers to those questions will help to narrow the field.

I agree, Lee... Sounds like it could be fuel pressure regulator or pump... Maybe even a clogged filter.

Get a gauge on the fuel rail and check pressures as suggested.
