IF YOUR COMPRESSOR CONSTANTLY CYCLES YOU HAVE A LOW CHARGE. YOU CAN RECHARGE IT. IF IT STILL CYCLES(COMPRESSOR ON AND OFF) A LOT YOU HAVE A LEAK. THEORETICALLY AN A/C SYSTEM SHOULD NEVER NEED A CHARGE. IF IT DOES THERE IS A LEAK. THE ? IS HOW BAD IS IT.A CHARGE PER SUMMER SEASON NOT BAD. ANYTHING MORE FIND THE LEAK. PEP BOYS AND SUCH HAVE DYE KITS TO TRACE A/C LEAKS. YOU MAY NEED TO REPLACE O RINGS OR TIGHTEN A FITTING TO CORRECT THE LEAK. OTHER TIMES RECEIVER/DRIERS ARE ROTTED,EVAPORATORS LEAK AND CONDENSORS LEAK.
ALL THE A/C COMPONENTS ARE AVAILABLE ON THE WEB. I USE AUTOPARTS WAREHOUSE BUT THERE ARE OTHERS...SHOP AROUND!!!
COMPRESSORS CAN ALSO FAIL BUT THIS IS RARE. IF THE COMP. ISN'T WORKING ITS USUALLY MEANS THE COMP. CLUTCHES ARE COOKED. THESE CAN BE REPLACED AT A FAR LESS COST THAN THE COMPLETE COMPRESSOR.

Volvo Air Conditioning Problems & Fixes
I doubt my problem is a leak. The car blows Ice Cubes when it runs. The compression is up and not dropping. It just shuts off at random. I believe if I punch it up a hill it will do the o-zone smell trick then it gets nice and toasty in the car. Also I drove it around all morning with no problems but as soon as it hit 90 degrees it started screwing up again. At least that appears to be two behaviors of it.
THE 850 AUTOMATICLY SHUTS OFF THE COMPRESSOR IN HIGH ENGINE LOAD SITUATIONS(UP A HILL, QUICK ACCELERATIONS). THIS GIVE S THE ENGINE MORE POWER BY SHUTTING OFF THE A/C. DOES YOUR A/C SMELL OCCUR ONLY WHEN ACCELERATING OR AT NORMAL CRUISE AS WELL?

usually, i have someone who i can ask to do things for me but the person i usually ask about my volvo just moved away!
so here's my question... when my a/c is on, i hear something under the hood cutting on and off every 2 to 3 seconds. what is that? how do i fix it? do i need to take it in? my a/c isn't blowing even cool air anymore but a friend told me how to fix that (actually he bought the R-134a and showed me where to use it). i can't get that cap off at all and--why lie?--i'm a little afraid i'll slip and cut my hand on that belt. can anyone help? it's a 95 850t
thanks y'all!

The something cutting on and off is you compressor. Right now, you don't have enough pressure to keep it on. Your friend who toldyou the fix with the 134a is right. Just try taking the cap off while the engine is off so you don't have to worry about the belt. Try recharging it and see how long it lasts. If it's less than say a week or 2 you may have a leak somewhere that needs to be fixed, but that's another discussion.lovemyvolvo1995 wrote:usually, i have someone who i can ask to do things for me but the person i usually ask about my volvo just moved away!so here's my question... when my a/c is on, i hear something under the hood cutting on and off every 2 to 3 seconds. what is that? how do i fix it? do i need to take it in? my a/c isn't blowing even cool air anymore but a friend told me how to fix that (actually he bought the R-134a and showed me where to use it). i can't get that cap off at all and--why lie?--i'm a little afraid i'll slip and cut my hand on that belt. can anyone help? it's a 95 850t

sambryan,
Did you ever find the answer to your problem? It is exaclty what my AC is doing. I have plenty of freon in the system and when it is on it is colder than any other AC I have felt. But it turns itself off and sometimes I can wait about 1 minute and turn it back on and other times I have wait 5 to 10 minutes. And it will not turn back non by itself, I must turn it off and wait and try turning it on again.

No I didn't fix it yet. My car is still doing the same thing. It is getting way worse. It drops when I accel or climb a hill but it isn't much of a hill I rarely get much over 3000 rpm. I can also be just driving along and the ozone smell comes rollin in. And yeah sometimes it lasts only a minute and sometimes it lasts for 5 or more. I was thinking about trying to empty all of the 134a and refilling it. There might be a slight chance that the R134a w/Oil that was added might be an issue. Other than that I have no clue.

Flacing lights on the ac controller means a probelm with the controller. I have the same problem - either the AC works all the time or when it gets hot >28 degrees C the AC cuts out. Turn it off to 30 sec and turn it on an it runs again for a while. I think the controller is bad and needs replacing.
Anyone else agree?

I was told by a volvo tech that my control unit is bad. They tried replacing the resistor and it still didn't work, plus they said one had the same problem earlier and the problem was the control unit. I cannot seem to find anyplace that sells the dual climate unit. I don't really want to get it though Volvo if I don't have to. Any ideas?
