Picking up my R today !

Post by phils94850 »

The Volvo Gods were on my side ... please read.. ( sorry for the long post but you'll like it )

Ive always wanted a 850 R. I went and looked at one locally, this is after i basically have my 94 850T sold so im thinking cool go pay for the R and drive home. Well.. the car is nothing like the photos and in poor shape. So back on craigslist looking around. Well.. i find one about an hour away, photos look good, owner talked good, so we make a deal. I take a day off work to go get the car and check the VIN no. night before im suppose to leave, and well... it comes up as a 95 volvo 850 GLT !!!!!!!! The jerk told me it had a rebuilt title but the darn VIN's dont match. Id say it was a clone or had a front clip put on it and he's selling as a real R ! BTW beware !! its on craigslist, lexington KY. DO NOT BUY IT !!

This is where the gods step in.. so, im basically without a car, have to have something for work, so i find a McClaren turbo grand am ( rare care ) on craigslist about 2hrs away. ( i know not a volvo ) but, i had to have a car for work until i could get another volvo. Anyways, i call and talk to the owner and where B.S.'ing on the phone and i mention im a volvo nut. He says "well.. i have a 96 R in my garage, im the second owner and had it for 9yrs." I said what !!!! Your kiddin. Ofcourse i ask all about it and if he'd sell and long story short we make a deal ! ( thank you volvo gods ).

So... here she is.. SUPER clean, meticuliously maintained, synthetic fluids since new, adult driven, No rust, no accidents, not even a door ding in the body ! It has 213k miles believe it or not. Ill have over 9+ yrs. in reciepts, the guy was a fanatic about keeping the car in top condition. He's owned it since it had 87k miles...... enjoy the pics !! let me know what you guys think ! Ive posted more pics in the "photos thread "- https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... &start=462

The kicker is.. its already got a tuned ECU !! ( close to 300hp, only mod done to it )

About 4-5 years ago, I had a hankering for a WHITE 850R big time
I almost bought three of them but every one of them either had a problem, was misrepresented or was way over priced for what it was.
(Settled on a Red/Charcoal with 53K original miles that turned out to be an awesome car that I drove for a couple of years)

Congrats on your purchase
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

and end with "they lived happily ever after". Nice find. I picked up my first R three weeks ago for only $600. It needs a turbo and has a burnt valve, but is pretty nice overall. Will be bringing this car to OEM stock condition ASAP.
