Broke my Manual shifter
Re: Broke my Manual shifter
one more quick thing, is there a way to completly change the shifters shaft, maybe a short shift or something?. Or maybe an links for a factory knob?
Eurosport Tuning and B&M both used to sell short shifters and they were expensive, but niether show them on thier sites anymore. You could try contacting them, but as few 5 speed 850's as there are out there they most likely don't carry them at all anymore.
Maybe you could measure the diameter of the shift shaft at the top (8, 10, or 12mm etc.) and then pick up a die and cut the treads for an aftermarket knob.
This should help with finding a knob and cutting the correct thread pitch.
Honda manual= M10x1.50
Mitsubishi, Nissan, Mazda manuals= M10x1.25
Toyota, Subaru manual = M12x1.25
Chevrolet Camaro 5 & 6 Speed manual= M16x1.50

firstly, i don't know where the instructions came from for removing the shifter but i'm pretty sure destroying the shifter is completely unnecessary. if you pull the bottom of the gaiter up and grab the collar near the knob you should be able to get it to slide down, exposing two tabs on the knob. if you press those and yank the knob up it should come off. unless volvo completely changed the knobs on the 99's which is totally possible. secondly, there is an 850 in the junkyard near me with a leather shifter which i think was in decent shape. mcmike, if you would like me to pick it up for you, i'll be heading there this week. just pm or email me.
