440 glove box

hello im new on here and have just bought a 1996 1.8 440 le and have a bit of a problem opening the glove box the little handle on the to has broken off and i have tryed unscrewing the hinges to get in from the bottom but with no success not sure if lock on glove box is locked or not as not sure if key turns to left or right to unlock has and one else had this problem or know how to open a glove box with the handle missing that could advise how to do it as spare keys are possibly in there thanks in advance simon

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Separate the two halves of the hinges by driving out the hinge pins.

thanks for the advice undone hinges but still cant get glove box open as cant release lock dont even know if lock in locked or unlocked position as dont know which way to turn lock to unlock

Have you tried turning it both ways?

yes tryed both ways the only thing i can say about it is its the most secure glove box lock ive ever come across think i may have to visit my local volvo dealer and see if thay can get it open thanks for the advice anyway i think the lock may have jammed when the handle broke off

Hello billofdurham do you by any chance have a picture with the explanation on how to assemble the 440 glove box lock? Cause I am having a nag of an issue with my glove box latch. A small piece of plastic broke inside where a small screw goes and the lock mechanism fell apart: I managed to put it back toguether but in the metal latch mechanism there is a small metal spring I just dont have a clue about how to fit it and the lock just doesnt lock up leaving the glove box light allways on cause I cant even lock it with the key. I'm using a temporary fix to keep it close so the battery wont drain but would love to have it fix back to normal.

All help is appreciated!

Apologies for the delay in replying but I have been searching books and discs to find a diagram with a blown up lock. Unfortunately I don't have one and I don't think Volvo would have produced one as they wouldn't consider the lock to be a repairable item.

finaly got glovebox open brut force and ignorance got it open volvos are very well built it might of been easier to open a safe then get into a volvo glovebox with a broken lock
