2006 S60 shift interlock

Post by bbrockway »

My 2006 S60 2.5T with geartronic xmission would not come out of park. Engine was running and brake pedal was depressed. After 20 minutes of jiggling the brake pedal and the ignition key, I finally was able to shift into drive. After driving home, I tried to repeat the problem several times, but operation was normal.

Is there a manual override on this car so I don't get stuck away from home if this happens again?

Any idea on how to diagnose/fix the problem, especially when it has happened only once?

Thanks much for any help you can provide.

I'm not sure on a manual override on these cars. There is a shift lock solenoid, which is more or less a little plunger that is activated with the key on and the brake pedal depressed. It is located underneath the shifter. I have heard of coffee/soda etc being spilled down in the console and hence causing the plunger to become sticky. You might also take your fist and give the shifter a firm tap downward. I had one that somehow worked its way upward just a little and when the button on the shifter was depressed it wasn't doing its job for lack of a better term. Mine gave a little pop when tapped downward and gave no problems after that, but the symptom was initially similar to yours.

Thanks much. This was helpful. Is the solonoid you speak of the little plastic box (1.5 X .75 inch) that is on the side of the shifter box toward the back of the car (I removed the cover from the console)?

Anyone know if there is a manual override? I am worried that if I take the car to a mechanic they will start replacing parts. Since it works now, I will not know if it is really fixed. It would be a logical thing for the Volvo engrs to put in an override - there must be one but I haven't been able to find it.
Thanks

If you follow the link below and scroll almost all the way down the page it will show you a picture of the solenoid.
