Hi all!
I have a new-to-me 2004 XC90 2.5 AWD. There are a few things on it that I'd like to take care of - the first being the cover over the cup holders in the center console.
I assume it's supposed to open/close with a slight push, but while it locks, it doesn't unlock - I have to pry it up to get it open.
It seems like something sticky got spilled in that area at some point - the "W" button doesn't seem to work at all.
Can anyone give me details on how to get the console off so I can clean this area?
Cup holder cover sticking

It may also be sticking because it is a factory defect. Almost every cup holder you see on these is open because the pen holder bows forward into the cover when it is pushed closed. I have tried boiling the pen holder and then pinching it and then quickly cooling it, it worked for a couple of weeks but since then it is the same problem. If all yours is is sticky you will be in luck!

I took it apart this afternoon, and here's what I found.
There were actually two problems preventing it from working smoothly. The first was that the front edge of the cover was rubbing against the plastic of the console; loosening the two small torx screws - one on each side - allowed me to push that up just enough to stop the rubbing.
However, the main problem is that the arm that's responsible for locking/unlocking the cover is warped - probably because it's been forced for who knows how long. Somehow, I doubt that I can buy just that part.
BTW, it is possible to remove just the cup holder without taking apart the whole console. Removing the rear armrest part, and then the carpeted cover under that, allowed me to get a hand under the cup holder and release the two clips holding it in.
