The Next Generation R
I had a breakthrough while driving around today... Maybe, the reason Volvo is taking a break from producing "R" cars is that they are using their money to develop a true sports car! One that may be more like the BMW M's and Audi S models. Not just a family car with "R" parts on it.

Them's some big shoes to fill...all of those cars have made huge leaps forward in recent years...taking on an AMG, Audi S-class, or BMW M is no small feat. Even the 2011 S60 T6 is a bit down in HP to a 2011 BMW 335i.
Car manufacturers today seem to be in power wars all over again, just like they were back in the muscle-car era. And there are just some phenomenal engines out there.

^^^ Agreed. The hp numbers are crazy these days. And they keep growing.
IMHO the "R Design" designation Volvo put on some sporty C30 and XC60 models was the wrong road to go down. It dilutes the R brand.
Either make a real R that goes fast as hell, or don't make one. Now confused car shoppers will be asking what's the difference between "R" and "R Design"?
