850 driver's side outer tie rod end - reverse threaded?

Post by mcp »

In replacing the driver's side outer tie rod end, are the jam nut and tie rod end reverse threaded? (Or is mine just stuck?)

Are you sure that your whole thread and nut are not spinning at the same time? Typical problem with tire rods. You need to keep them from spinning using a pickle fork.

The tie rod is already loose from the steering knuckle. I'm talking about the other end.

I use a pipe wrench to hold the nut on the inner tie rod end. I jam it up against the control arm so i have my hands free and then use another pipe wrench on the tie rod.

Movement of the inner tie rod is irrelevant. First you need to separate the jam nut from the outer tie rod. Use two open end wrenches to do so. THEN secure the inner tie rod with a wrench and unscrew the outer tie rod.

The nut is not reverse thread I replaced both sides on my T-5 over the weekend. The nuts to seize after a lot of swearing, heating, hammering I resorted to locking the flats on the track rod itself then with a 2 tonne trolley jack and spanner forced teh nut to rotate [don't do this at home unless you know what you're doing]

Thank you for the replies. I just did not want to keep "muscling" it if I was going in the wrong direction.
