Alarm won't shut off

I've had this car for about a week so I haven't read the manual yet...this morning I went to my car and the alarm was going off. I hit the buttons on the remote and it shut off but I couldn't unlock the car with the remote. When I keyed into the driver side the alarm went off again. I put the key in the ignition and the alarm turned off but it wouldn't turn over and the alarm went off again. After getting cursed out by my neighbors, I SOMEHOW silenced it and took my husband's car to work. Is there a trick to turning off the alarm???
