1999 V40 Rear Brake Pad Replacement

Post by Ricky_devon »

Hi All,

I'm trying to replace the rear brake pads on my Wifes' 99 V40 prior to its annual MOT test, I can't see how you retract the caliper pistons (i.e. back off the handbrake adjustment, which operates on the same piston), anyone done this before?

Thanks, Ricky.

The pistons have to be turned back in using a special tool as in the attached:

I have heard of people who have managed without the tool. The trick is to keep enough pressure on the piston as it is turned in.

Thanks for the info Bill. I managed to wind the pistons in with a pair of pipe grips, (having first pushed the guaiter part up the piston to stop the grips damaging it), and a pry bar to exert pressure onto the end of the piston. I also had to completely detatch the caliper from the axle to gain access. Anyone else attempting this should take care to remove any dirt from the piston to avoid damaging the caliper seals.

I tried twice to download the pdf file. Adobe Reader gave a message that the file is damaged and cannot be repaired.

I have downloaded it using Adobe and Foxit, which is my .pdf reader of choice, and it has worked OK.

Is your Adobe working on other files on the forum?

Attention: If you are having a problem opening the file you just have to rename the file.

If you take a close look at the file it has to periods before the file extension. "S_V40 Rear brake Tool..pdf" Notice the two dots before the "pdf"? You have to remove one of those for the drawing to open.

I downloaded it and it would not open so I renamed it and it opened the file.
