Part smoking, what is it?

Okay, so my wife 98 S70 GLT has started smoking from under the hood. Once I got under the car and looked this is where it is coming from. It's centered on the bottom rear of the engine (Closest to the firewall) and smoke is coming out of the circled area in the photo. Any ideas on what it is and what I need to do? I have zero knowledge on what this is.

I'm a little unclear - from what angle did you take the picture? If this is from under the engine looking towards the rear of the car, it may be your downpipe.

Yes, under the engine on the rear of the engine, Looking straight up it is almost on the same line as the front wheels. Only had to go under the engine about as far as I would to look up at the oil drain plug. (Hope all that makes sense!) The bottom of the picture leads to the engine. The top of the picture would continue to lead to the rear of the car.

That's where your exhaust manifold connects to the turbocharger.

Is the top of that piece or the turbocharger covered in oil by chance? That will certainly cause it to smoke.

(Here's another picture to give a point of view)

I went in from the top of the engine and removed the metal shield above it. I see no oil on it. Gonna tinker around with it thanks for helping me identify what it is.

I noticed the turbo has oil on it. It is really common for the turbo oil return line gasket and or o-ring to fail. It is actually a really easy fix, and cheap.

Oh, that was mine - I just attached it as a reference for where the rest of the tubing went - clogged PCV system was the culprit there :D

Have you changed your flame trap recently, or on schedule? I suspect you have leaking issues related to a clogged flame trap. The oil on top could be leaking from your rear cam seals. Look under the distributor, and under your cam shaft sensor. If you see oil dripping, or wet, it could be your problem. Ours leaked down there on both 850's, until we changed the seals and did the flame trap
