1999 S70 Sputtering Advice?

My wifes 1999 S70 is Sputtering. I took it to an Auto Parts place and they checked the codes. They said it was a misfire on cylinder 5 and to replace the spark plugs.

I did...

It is still Sputtering.

I checked the wires as best I know how and all looks fine. I even scraped the part where the spring makes contact.

What am I missing?

You probably need to get a replacement coil pack for that cylinder. While you're at it, check for cracking on the sides of any of the others.

Could you explain" exactly" where the problem cracking would be?

I noticed the very tip (the end that touches the spark plug) on a couple of them having small chips. Is that what you are talking about?

Look for cracks up and down the long narrow part of the coil. When the engine heats up, they'll expand and ground directly to the inside of the cylinder wells instead of to the top of the spark plug. A small chip at the bottom shouldn't cause a problem. Other times, they just die outright.

Swap coil on cyl # 5 with cyl #1 (or any other one really. Clear the codes. If the misfire moves to that cylinder then the coil is the issue.

Oh, no!

It sounding great starting it after installing the new coil pack and a short test drive but my wife says it is still running rough on her daily commute today.

What now?

You may have more than one bad coil. With the a hot engine running, parking brake set, and wheels chocked/blocked, put the car in gear, then, one at a time, disconnect the 3 wire connecter to the top of each coil. A good coil will have a drop then rise in rpm. A bad coil will have no effect on idle speed. It is possible to have a bad coil, and not get a Check Engine light. Also, as the car warms up, the bad coil will show itself, where as when it's cold, the coil will work normally. That is what happened to three of my coils. The other two didn't like to get wet when hosing off the engine when I first cleaned it. Over a period of three months, I ended up changing all five coils, last winter. The ones that Autozone sells are actually Bosch coils. They sell them for $50.00 each. Months later, I see IPD now sells the high performance coils from the V70R for the same price. If your wife can get by with out the car for a few days, I would order from IPDUSA.com R/ Allen
