Hi,
I'm hoping somebody can help my mother from being ripped off at the dealer.
She has a 2001 V70 2.4T. Even if she fills the car with gas, the fuel gauge never goes above the halfway mark. So the gauge will show empty when the tank is really still half full. She keeps track of her mileage between fill ups and has just lived with the problem.
But now she has to take the car in for a recall to do with the fuel pump. As part of the recall, they have to remove the fuel tank and inspect the fuel pump. So since they are already having to do all that, she figures she will get them to fix the fuel gauge problem while they're in there.
I understand this car has two sensors that control the fuel gauge. I understand that one of them is part of the fuel pump so if that's the one that is bad and they replace the fuel pump as part of the recall, she shouldn't be charged anything. But if it's the other one that's bad, I guess she would be charged for the part.
Is it true that there are two sensors that control the fuel gauge? I figure we would have no way to verify which one was bad but if we sound like we know what they are talking about maybe they would be less likely to charge us for something that was part of the recall.
Any other rip-off avoidance tips would be appreciated too!
Thanks,
Fay

Just to close this out, we took the car to the dealer for the recall. They said the fuel pump was not one of the ones that needed to be replaced. So I still don't know if there are multiple fuel senders on this car or not but we'll just live with the gauge problem because they wanted over $100 just to diagnose it.
