98 s70 Speaker replacement

Ive been looking at replacing the speakers in my S70 as well, however, I'm not terribly interested in doing a complete system upgrade, just replacing the speakers... Buuuuuut, I have an idea.

Since the HU is just putting out 4channels, would it not be beneficial to just run new lines to the front doors and rear shelf?
I have some 8" mid-range woofers that are shallow mount for the rear, and some old Polk DBs 6.5" that fit the doors. Does anyone see a problem with this setup?

Perhaps somewhere down the line I'll take my old sub out of the attic, get an inexpensive new 6.1 channel HU, and throw some tweeters in the dash.

I just Installed two 6-1/2" speakers in the front doors of the 98 s70.
You must re-use the plastic brackets that hold the old speakers as the recess is too shallow without them to fit most any speaker. I found drilling four holes into the brackets for the new speakers was easy enough.
I didn't have a working drill so I just used a pocket knife.

The red plastic screws must rest in the down position to remove the bracket.
I Haven't looked at the rear doors yet, but I assume they're very similar.

I'm actually about to change out all of my speakers with aftermarket and get a new head unit and 4-channel amp in the future. I've done stereo systems in my previous cars, but this S70 GLT is different in the speaker configuration. The SC-816 has a 6-channel 25w amp inside of it. There are 8 speakers in my setup: 2 in the dash, 2 in the front doors, 2 in the rear doors, and 2 in the read deck.

The dash and the front doors are on their own channels (ie. 1-4) and the rear doors and deck share the last 2 channels. The dash and front door speakers are 4 ohms and the rear door and deck are 8 ohms that are wired in parallel to get a 4 ohm load to the head unit.

I've gone over this setup a million times to figure out what I want to do and I finally settled on doing an 8-channel stereo. I'm going to use the aftermarket HU for the dash and rear doors and the 4-channel amp will power the front doors and rear deck.

I was going to make a 2-way in the front and a 3-way in the back, which would actually take care of the 4-channel problem. It would be totally custom with 2- and 3-way crossovers with 4-ohm speakers with high power handling. Maybe another time perhaps.

This is a four channel system with a total of eight 8 ohm speakers.
The speakers are wired in parallel pairs to provide a total of
four 4 ohm loads to the four channels of power provided by the 816.

Volvo chose decent speakers for these cars and many have
enjoyed a nice improvement by starting with an HU upgrade
and using the stock speakers. For people that want a little
more, adding a sub can be a significant improvement.

Once you get that far, you may want to start tweaking
the four corners of existing speakers to your taste. Or not.
But I'd consider starting with a new HU and going from there.

From the wiring diagram I have, it doesn't show the front doors and dash wired off of each other like the rear doors and deck. They go right into the head unit. Where did you get your information? I'm just curious is all really.

Nothing special about this factory setup but the
kinda wierd front speaker wiring. No idea why...

It shows that way in the diagram, but the speaker
outputs are connected in parallell within the HU.
If you have a look at an aftermarket wiring harness
adapter, you'll spot the external bridging leads.

I took my front door speaker out today so I can see how I'm going to get my new component set in. Lo and behold, the front door is 4 ohms like I thought. I'm not sure why some other manual is saying that the SC-816 is 60x4, but in my owner's manual, it says just 25w and no channels.

I'm going to be putting the new speakers in probably in the next couple of days. The problem I'm going to have is where to put the crossover. It's a little smaller than a Sony PSP, but thicker. The last time I had crossovers, I put them inside the doors to use the factory wiring. I don't care about running wire, but its not going to be fun going through the door.

Also the factory door speakers are just locked in place and not screwed. No biggie there, but it'll mess up the factory bracket if you screw the new speaker in. I'll post pics with my cruddy phone when I do it so others can see how it is.

SC-816
Power output: 4 x 25 W (10% dist.)
Output impedance: 4 Ohms
System voltage: 12 Volts, negative ground

4 x 25w is the rated output for the 816 as a standalone.
There was a 4 x 40w offered for the SC-816 in S/V's.
The 4 x 60w would be with the optional amp for a C70.
The Coupe/vert was also available with a 4 x 100w amp.

Even if that's the case with these online manuals, why would Volvo mix 8 ohm and 4 ohm speakers into an 8 driver system? The amplifier shouldn't be able to drive 4 drivers at 4 ohms on 2 channels with the speakers being 4 ohms themselves. The back 4 speakers are 8 ohms wired in parallel to create a 4 ohm load. The front speakers are 4 ohms, so I don't know how it would do it unless it was a 6 channel amp.
