1998 XC70 rear drive shaft repair?

The carrier bearing is failing wondering if the carrier bearing can be replaced or do I need a whole shaft? Also wondering were to purchase the bearing or shaft any recommendations?

Well after sleeping on it a day or two I decided not to drive the car with the shaft in the state of repair it is in the parts on either end are to expensive. I am not flush with $$ and a rebuilt shaft at the time is not really an option the carrier bearing has to be replaceable wondering where I can purchase one? After reading posts of guys driving for years with these bearings bad it probably would not do damage but with my luck it would.

Bearing not available. The only repairable/replaceable piece is the front joint
Best rebuilt shafts are from
Colorado Driveshaft
About $400 or so

(It's called the propshaft not a rear driveshaft)

Colorado driveshaft gets there parts somewhere and most folks have never heard of a propshaft if you ask about such a thing you are directed to marine use. The MAIN reason I purchased this vehicle was the AWD so without the shaft my 1986 Olds cutlass wagon (255k+) is just as effective, ran out of $$ on the engine swap so a rebuilt shaft will have to wait, I could drive the car in good faith with the same propshaft and a new carrier bearing.

Why don't you ask Colorado where they get their parts if you're so determined?
Being a driveshaft rebuilder, my guess is that they have them made or they make the part themselves.

Personally, until it's fixed I would remove it for now (you have to remove it anyway to repair or change it, (takes 20 minutes)
It will only get worse then the shuddering will become unbearable and the XC will become undriveable.

So the bad bearing will not damage the bevel gear or the viscous coupling?

I think what JRL was trying to say, is remove the driveshaft, and drive the car as a front drive volvo untill you get a new shaft from either Colorado driveshaft or the dealer. Yes, if the driveshaft is left in the car, and wobbles around the carrier bearing support, causing bad vibrations, at worst it will only destroy the rear seal of the angle gear, at worst, it will destroy the angle gear. What everyone is trying to tell you, is to remove the driveshaft to the rear wheels and just drive the car in front wheel drive only. Then, when you can afford to repair/replace the driveshaft, your angle gear will still be there to do it's job. BTW, a new angle gear will run well over $1000 just inparts alone. R/ Allen

Thanks for the help Guys. I really did not mean to sound abrasive but just to the point. A local drive shaft company found a replacement carrier bearing somewhere in California said it would run 175 with no guarantees. When the guys at Colorado driveshaft can supply a fully rebuilt and balanced shaft with a year warranty for a little more than 400 I decided to wait and purchase from them. I put the propshaft back in the auto no vibration running down the road until about 65mph but slow speed turns forward it thumps pretty good so I will probably take it back out. Today a new problem Oil leak front of the motor coming from above the oil pan seam so its not that gasket the dip stick has a seal on it the only thing other than that I can think is up there is the PCV critter could that be leaking oil or is there another place to look. Pretty hard to see anything in the front under the intake. Put 100 miles on the car today it is fun to drive. Please help with thoughts on where the oil could be coming from? One thing the oil on the dipstick is clean and clear the oil out of the front of the engine and running down the oil pan is dark?
