I have an 1996 850R with 186K. CEL light came on so I replaced the wires cap rotor bosch universal oxygen sensor. Erased the code, rode around a little bit and CEL is back again! I heard that the universal oxygen sensor do not work very well so I replaced it with the one that fits on the car ( front sensor). Drove it around the CEL light is on again! I talked to one of my friends he said it could be MAF sensor and clean it . he also asked me what kind of air filter do you have on it and told him I have a K&N filter. He told me that oil gets sucked into the MAF sensor and screws it up.Cleaned up the MAF And guess what ,CEL on again! Do you have any ideas?

Usually that code only comes up because of an old O2 sensor.

Since you have replaced it, I would reset the computer and let it re-learn what to expect. Pull off the negative battery cable and go hit the brake pedal a couple times, then re-connect it.

Let us know if it comes back again, and we'll try to have some more ideas.

took CEL code out disconected battery for 1/2 hour
stepped on brake peddle acouple of times
reconnected battery , took car out for about 20+ miles... no CEL
When would the CEL come on again if it did?
If it does bad connection ? Where?
By the MAF? Or by the front O2 sensor?

If it's going to come back, it will within 50-200 miles or so of driving, or a couple drive cycles. 20's not enough for it to reset and re-learn everything fully yet.

I wouldn't see this one as too much of a bad connection problem, but it might not hurt you to put some electrical contact goop on both ends.

I have owned 5 volvos in the past(2 present) where your car runs bad, do a tune up and off you go!
who would think that you would have to disconnect the battery.. let it reset and re-learn everything
and hopefully it works! I have owned this car for 6 years and thought I knew alot about it ...
very humbling experience

Its back!!!!
I have done everything... cleaned MAF, cleaned the connections both O2 sensors used die electric grease
Disconnected battery..reset, with same results
Have any ideas?

Do you still have the universal sensor that you removed? If so, install it into the one for the rear and splice it up. From a bit of reading, it looks like that code can appear too when the delay between the front and rear sensors is significant.

Hi
My car developed an exhaust leak at the cat... had that fixed
I put the O2 sensor on
Is there anything else I can do ?
It is getting real old trying to resolve this problem!

RESOLVED!!!!!!!
The car has about 350 miles on it now ...no CEL
Runs great !
