Ever been annoyed as hell when you take a car for an MOT and you're pretty confident it'll sail through it, only to be presented with £hundreds worth of repair bill?
Seriously, how do you know for sure that your pants aren't being pulled down by an unscrupulous garage? Well you could go to somewhere in the good garage scheme, or to somewhere you know one of the mechanics, but not everyone will be able to.
The alternative is, believe it or not, to take your pride and joy to your local council workshops. As they have MOT's to do on they're own light vans and "company" cars, as well as school minibuses etc, they are, by law, required to offer the service to the general public.
They can't however, do any work on your car if it fails so the is no incentive for them to fail it, so only faults that actually exist are found.
Check out this link to Money Saving Expert.com Council MOT's , which also lists all the council run workshops in the country.
and read some of the testimonials, here's mine, i took my 440 Turbo in and got 2 fails, emissions and brake pipe corrosion, which, as it was a £265 ebay purchase that arrived 2 days late on the morning i'd booked the test for, i thought was a result!
