Wood Or No Wood

Hey Guys,

I have two whole dash carriers and am trying to make up my mind on which to use. Carrier ONE is factory cherry wood and I have matching shift plate and knob. It is a bit brittle on top and a bit spidered but otherwise excellent. Carrier TWO is plain black and is not dry or cracked but needs a the hush panel mounts reinforced.

So the question is WOOD or NO WOOD, whats the consensus

The wood accents make the cars (at least the -70 series) look soooooo much better.

I have never been a fan of the tan interior on Volvos though, but it still may add a nice touch to it.

I totally agree with jablackburn....850 also looks much better with wood interior.I vote for wood.

I have to agree. The wood makes the car look a lot more luxurious.

The key word in the question was factory. The S70 I bought for my daughter had an aftermarket kit and it looked much worse than no trim at all since it had deteriorated and separated so badly.

I like Yew which is a warm yellowish tan coloured wood. Cheer is very nice as well as. I think it comes down to personal taste.

+1 for wood.
I've seen the R version with aluminum and ended up with a wood dash.
MUCH warmer, luxurious, inviting, classy, etc.
I've also seen the stick-on's mentioned above.
Not a nice thing to do to a Volvo...

I've seen the factory wood, and it does seem very nice! My '98 S70 came through with plastic fake "burl" for the inlays on the console (and glove box, if I'm remembering right). 11+ years down the road the plastic is cracking and looking pretty nasty. Does anyone have a recommendation for an aftermarket wood kit that I could replace the plastic with?

Dave,

There are ton's of kits on eBay in the $125.00 range but at then end of the day they will look just as bad as what you are replacing after a few years. That said, I think that is the route I am going to go for my daughter.

The wood surround in my T5 is darker than the one shown. Maybe it's walnut ??

Also, I've seen a Volvo 850 that had wood veneer inserts in each of the door panels, and it looked very classy. I tried to obtain a set for my wagon but have not been successful to date.

Does anyone on this forum know if Volvo ever published and/or specified what types of wood veneer finishes were available for the 850s & S/V70s?
