The green weasel, my94 non turbo 850 needs a new engine due to lube shop installing wrong filter and subsequent bottom out. I shut it down when the light went out but it was making some noise. Will the newer v70 engines fit if I retain the old sensors and hardware? Will an older 850 turbo engine work if I swap ecus? What engines will fit without too much of a hassle? Any sources for good used engines? Any sources for rebuild parts ie bearing pistons etc? I'd like to get a plan together and review my options before tearing the thing down and assessing the damage. The weasel has 245k and to see it go down after 16 years over a wrong filter is heartbreaking.
Thanks
850 20v non turbo engine replacement

Easiest bet would be to find any 94-98 non-turbo engine. They're plentiful. If you know the engine is shot, don't waste your time tearing it down, that could be time spent replacing it.
After doing a turbo engine swap in an AWD, doing a fwd non-turbo swap would be relatively easy.

Wrong filter as in too long extending below oil pan. Apparently, some lube places do not stock proper filters and use what fits. I usually have my own filters and/or change my own oil, but unfortunately not this time.

Are you sure the engine is destroyed? Did the bottom out crack the block or something? Compression test?

The car starts and drives but haS A knock under load. SOme bearing damage definitely done. was oil starved for a good couple minutes and knocking when this happened. Today it was tight at initial start when I refilled and checked. I can get another engine for 600 bucks or rebuild this one. I don't think I can tell how bad it really is without tearing it apart. I havent done a compression test yet. I'd prefer to try to rebuild this one although it'd be cheaper to get a 600 dollar engine and drop it in there. Has anyone out there done an 850 rebuild?

Filter on it was pennzoils pz-19 / po-19, which they recommend for 94 turbo cars; pz-21 or po 21 for NA cars.mistakenly put pz-19 on my car. pz-19 is too long. My car bottomed out and scraped the filter so I experienced gradual oil loss until all gone. DON'T use the pz-19 or po-19 filters, they extend a couple inches below the pan and are vulnerable.

Not sure where you are but in PA but Maroney's Foreign Car and Parts 724-872-6316 has one for $275 .. call them and see what they have!
Also try Henderson Foreign Auto Parts USA-PA(Scottdale) 1-724-887-8700 they have a few around $200
Easiest thing to do is get one with the tranny connected and that way you can save lots of time when removing and installing the replacement.
