Back again. You guys helped me in 2009 when I burned a valve. I rebuilt the engine cylinder head then,& the car has run great since then. About a month ago I checked the oil level , & it was full up. I drove the car about 4 miles, when the oil light lit.
Stopped the car immediately . Checked the oil level again & the sump was completely empty. Towed it home, & put it up on ramps.
I keep my engine very clean, but it had So much oil sprayed down the right rear of the engine that I could not see where it came from. I took off the timing belt covers & the cam seals were clean & dry as was the crankshaft seal. I cleaned it all down, dumped in 4quarts of oil, & stop leak, ran the car standing, for 40 minutes, with no leak. The car sat for about a week, then I topped up the oil. drove the car 8 miles, the oil light went on & the sump was empty. Again the leak was at the right rear of the engine, but such a mess that I cant be sure, but it seems about where the head sits on the block. But no apparent cause.

By right rear is that as you look at it, or as you are sitting in the car?

If as you look at it, may be the RMS but I can't imagine one blowing that much oil out that quickly. I mean, mine has been leaking now for like 60,000 miles.

if the right side is the front of the engine, it could be the oil cooler lines

Sitting in the car it is the right side, or the timing belt end of the engine, behind the engine( between the engine & the firewall),
needless to say that with 5 quarts of oil saturating that corner of the engine, that whole side,(passenger side) of the car is soaked, the whole top of the frame rail is floated, the whole way to the rear, even the inside of the rear bumper.

I described my Volvo as basic, because it seemed the way other owners on your site used that designation for the non-turbo model,so I apologise for not having the correct information listed. Anyway Ive got no turbo,so no turbo oil lines! I guess its back up on the ole ramps, once more with feeling. wish me luck. thanks!

There's a seal behind the timing belt; I suspect that one has blown out entirely on your car.

I had a camshaft seal on the other side dump a whole quart of oil in 5 miles. I'd suggest removing the top of the timing cover and having a look.

Well, best I can say is clean up the oil, top it off, drive around for a mile and see what happens. If it blows half the oil contents out in 8 miles maybe going a shorter distance and checking will let you trace it easier?

I have been meaning to rig up an inspection camera for the longest time to try and catch problems like this... a little bullet security camera is $70 and you just run it in the car to a digital recorder and provide 12v to the camera... just get a strong clamp and bolt it to the camera's threaded mount. Then you can drive around and monitor (well, a passenger can) the affected area and record it for later.

As I said in the original submission, I checked behind the timing belt covers & it is dry. There was some oil under the valley cover
(over the spark plugs) but not much. My plan at this time is to add some oil, put the car up on ramps, start it up & watch the oil fly. Does anyone know a witch doctor in Pa. ? I'm getting desperate. Thanks

How about this part:

Name: Oil Pan Side Cover Gasket

Part Code: 1366791

http://www.eeuroparts.com/Main/PartDeta ... id=1366791

Says that all 850s use it, turbo and non-turbo
