Quick update - the shop replaced the lower mount and one of the upper one (the one that looks like a torque arm). Seems to have made bit of a difference though it isn't smooth. Anyway, since it happens only the first coupla seconds, I will just ignore and live with it.

Matthew - thanks for maintaining this site. It is great!

I am in San Francisco bay area. If you have recommendations about a good Volvo mechanic, I would appreciate it. My factory warranty runs out end of this month and the dealer service shop is very expensive.

BTW, how big of a deal is having a 'Volvo Computer' to check out a Volvo?

Having an OBDII code reader is useless and a waste of money -- if you have a shop nearby that'll read your codes for you for free :). The Volvo dealer near me did it a couple times for me, then I bought the tool -- well, traded some advertising on this site for it rather.

and it's hell to use. I'm a programmer and I'm stumped sometimes by the interface. I can't find the product's website that I have. I'd be pissed if I had actually paid for it.

I'd get a Palm device-compatible code reader software product. Anything over $100 is a rip, in my opinion, but you may not be able to find anything less than that. I saw really simple-to-use looking Palm software some time ago. Can't remember the name.

The mystery continues...

Drove a friend's '95 850 today with a few more miles than my S70, and he drove mine. His also has a new poly upper mount (like mine), and to reiterate, I've had a lower mount replaced also.

His=no vibration, very smooth engine.

He said he noticed mine, sitting at traffic lights at idle, feels "buzzy", droning, especially in the steering wheel. He said he probably wouldn't have paid that much attention to it if I hadn't mentioned it before he drove it, but it was noticeable.

So, any ideas? Could it just need a tuneup? Could it be gunky fuel injectors? Car seems to drive/perform like his, just his idle and takeoff was so smooth (and no kick when the car first starts).

I have a pretty new (7800 miles) 2003 S60 2.4T with a similar problem. It has a slight but pronounced vibration at idle and even feels a little strange under heavy acceleration. It has been like this since new ( Euro delivery) and I was hoping it would just take care of itself. I looked at the engine at idle and it did seem to be shaking more than it should. My last ride was a '97 Passat GLX with the VR6. Much smoother than this

The dealer has been great. They have looked at it twice and spent lots of time trying to track this down. All they could find was an engine mount that had been slightly overtourqed at the factory. Very slight improvement. They are willing to replace the mounts under warranty.

Any Ideas?

It may be worth getting the mounts changed - it is a pretty quick job and since it is covered by warranty it is worth a try. This took care of similar problem on my Volvo

Took mine in a few weeks ago and had a tune-up. The engine is even smoother and runs even better, but vibration coming through steering wheel is still there. Mechanic said it is definitely caused from an engine mount, but which one?! He said it is very rare to have to replace the other mounts (upper and right - front of engine - have been replaced). Anybody got any ideas? Ever had others replaced? Am now to the point of telling him to keep it and replace everything until he finds the magic fix. I'll let you know.

This seems like such a minor thing - didn't really pay attention to it during test drive, but it's really the only thing keeping me from enjoying the way the car drives.

I have the same problem with my 2002 S60. It was always there, but after doing some other engine work I noticed the upper cross bar torsion mount was really torn up. This, I thought explained the exsessive torque steer I have had for quite a while. I replaced it. It corrected the torque steer but I am left with a much higher rate of cabin vibration at idle in drive. I noticed the comment about the overtorquing of the mount. I think I will back off on the centerpin bolt and see if the helps. If you all have other thoughts please chime in..........

I have the exact same problem and just posted it and then I found this one. I too will be replacing all the mounts as soon as I have the time and energy to do it, but ya I find it very annoying. The change in my ashtray actually shakes lol.
