Service Light - - need a clue

The service light popped on yesterday. No idea what it's telling me. I do know that I'm probably overdue on an oil change....does it track mileage between oil changes? Do I have to get someone to scan it to identify the problem?

It's set to go on every 7,500 miles (oil reminder). It doesn't "know" when you change oil, so if you're off its schedule, it's useless. I know there is a reset procedure, but it may differ for the different years.

On my car anyway (2000), this is how I do it if I recall correctly:

1. Put car into ignition Position I.
2. Press and hold the Trip odometer reset button (the one that sticks out on gauge clusters).
3. While still holding it, switch the ignition to Position II.
4. Keep holding until the service message starts flashing.
5. Once flashing, release it and you're done!

Unfortunately the '98 requires a trip to the dealer. There is a tool available but it's expensive. You either live with it or put a small piece of black tape over it!

It can't be reset on a '98 without a special tool. You'll have to learn to either ignore it (it does serve as a good reminder to not use the turbo much until it goes out), buy a Draper Reset tool, or wait til one of your other dash lights burn out, go in there and remove the bulb, and smash it. Evil dumb thing.

Darn, well there's one benefit of the later Gen 1s.

Well if I couldn't reset it, I'd just ignore it or take it out when servicing other bulbs as jablackburn suggested!

I kinda like the Draper tool. A more elegant solution for a nice, Swedish car.

And once you're synched, it's actually kinda helpful.
(Although they have gotten more expensive lately...)
It resets SRS, too.

If you pull the kick panel above the driver's knees, you can reach inside and pull the service light bulb from the back. Permanent fix.

I have the VOL-FCR software and an old VAGCOM cable from Ebay. The software is like $150 and the cable is about $25 but it will reset service and SRS lights.

It also reads various modules (climate control, and engine computers NOT being among the important ones it will read in older cars...) might read your ECU since your car is newer, you need MOTRONIC 4.4 and I have 4.3.

I got vol-fcr serial cable along with cracked software(vol-fcr 1.3) for about 25$ from e-bay.

Is that what you have a full or cracked version of vol-fcr 1.3?

Thanks guys - - I guess Volvo's thinking is that most folks will take their car into the dealer for the oil change anyway. Still, it's an unfortunate design for guys like me who does the oil change.

Any idea how much it costs for a dealer to cancel the light....in a metro area like DC?
