Cam Shaft Position Sensor Error-CVVT Solenoid and Hub Issues

Post by burgertimegirl »

I have a 2000 V70. I'm getting error code P1671 and failed my emissions test because of the error. My OBD II reader said P1671 Volvo CMP Actuator Performance Problem Or Signal Out Of Range CMP=Camshaft Position. This is also what someone had posted in another topic here.

I spoke with the Volvo dealer, and he said this is a generic code and that it may not actually be the problem, and the only way to know for sure is to take it to a Volvo dealer and have it read on the Volvo computer for $135. Is this true, or is he just trying to get me to go to the dealer for the repair, which will cost me $200 more than at another shop.

Thanks

That problem is normally related to the CVVT Valve or clogged oil passages from the valve to the actuator on the cam. The CVVT Valve is located on the top of the head just above the exhaust cam on the front of the engine. An Ohmmeter check will tell you if it is completely dead. There are only two terminals going to the valve and it should read very low resistance (a few ohms) if it is electrically good. If it reads high resistance then the valve itself is toast.

You can try to clean the valve but you should pick up a new gasket for it before you even start. Use Carb cleaner to spray any gunk out of the valve and look at the passages into the head to see if they are clogged.

Thanks for the reply.

I took the car to the dealer and had it scanned. It said the problem was the CVVT solenoid and the CVVT hub. Does anyone know if I can just replace the solenoid and hope the CVVT hub error clears? The CVVT hub is going to run me over $800 to have it installed.

Also, we think we can do the CVVT solenoid ourselves, but the dealer wants $200 for the part. We found it at Swedish Auto Parts for $115. Is this a reputable seller?

Thanks

Even better! I try to avoid Auto Parts Warehouse associated sites, which most of those you linked to are. I ordered an alternator for a Buick once through them, and they sent me the wrong one, then had to go through hell and back again to get them to return it for the correct part.
