Mine's a 99 2.0T and I'm pretty sure that I have to turn on the ignition and then hold down the odometer button until light flashes and then release it.

There are IIRC subtle differences from year to year

1, Hold down the odometer button

2, Turn the ignition so all the lights come on

3, Keep holding the odometer down for 30 secs or until the service light starts flashing

4, Release the odometer button while service light flashing

5, Turn off and on again to check

Just did that with my 2003 s40
by the way.....why Volvo can't change the programming for service light to go on 7000 miles from last service and not factory set mieage....

I have an old -97 V40 Td with the Renault F8Q engine. I have never seen the service lamp in this car while 100 000 km... Does it have one?

None of the above worked for my S 40 T4 including the diagnostic computer at my garage. Solved the problem by removing the bulb. The unit comes loose easily and bulb can be removed without taking off the steering wheel.

Tried the above... doesn't work... I'm assuming this is only for 1999 models onwards?
Does anyone know the procedure for resseting the 1998 model...
Also, the Diagnostics computer wouldn't work... kept saying there was an error in the connection to the Control Unit... The Workshop insisted it was a problem with the cars CU, that this is a common fault in Volvo's (altho the car has now done 213 000 KM's and not had this problem before) and not there machine... is this the case?

Hi.
I followed the flwg instructions and was working quote
ignition key to position I. push in and hold the odometer rest button (use your left hand). move the ignition key to position II. wait until you see the service light blinking. then release the odometer rest button unquote

if this does not work take the bulb out, so I ll never see it again.
personally I do not need a light to remember me a service on my car regards

I have a 1998 V40. Two years ago I took it to my local garage for service and they were unable to reset the service light. They said they had all the latest Crypton gear, and that the Crypton man had told them there would be no problem. There was. Days later they came back to me and said they'd heard of a way to do it - the odometer reset way. It didn't work, not did any possible combination of switching and pressing over a one-hour period.

My research on the internet at the time revealed that in the late '90s, car manufacturers in Europe were taken to task about unfair competition, having service lights that could only be reset by franchised Volvo dealers. Crypton brought out software to reset the light at about the same time as Volvo who, anticipating the change in the law, derived the odometer button pressing system. My car seems to have fallen between two reset systems.

Does anyone REALLY know how to rest a 1998 40-series light? I found a way - when my next service was due I took it to be serviced at a Volvo dealer. So much for fair competition! Now the car is due for service again and I don't know whether to use my local man again (and risk having to stare at the service light for another year), or go to Volvo and pay double for havingf the car serviced.

I've had the car since new and thgis is my only real gripe about it. Someone out there (other than Volvo) must know how it's done!

I have a 2004 V40 and the way to do it is hold the od reset in turn key to position II, wait till the service light starts to flash then start the car.
I think it should work for you.
